Collaborative Project with Derek Lidstone and Caryn Swark.
One of the largest, most extensive collaborations was the Maths 6 and New Media project collaboration which took place with St. Patrick Fine Arts Elementary school. Both Derek Lidstone and Caryn Swark, and their grade 6 classes, were part of this collaboration, and at some times, all three teachers were working in the classroom with the students.
The purpose of the project was to have grade 6 students demonstrate a mastery of an outcome from Maths 4 or 5 through the use of a technology-focused project. These individual projects have since been housed on a larger class database for use by other teachers and classes. (See Mr. Lidstone's home page for more details.)
All these projects were generated entirely by students with the express purpose of supporting metacognitive understanding of their learning processes. The formative assessment, and the detailed level of analysis required by all students involved, are both arguments in favour of doing a project like this again. Though time-consuming, it was an excellent demonstration of 21st Century Learning.
